Hospice Design Resource, PLLC

Hospice Design Resource, PLLC (HDR) is an architectural firm specializing in the design and development of hospice facilities. Founded (1982) in Charlotte, NC as Mullinax & Cofer, Architects, PLLC, the firm originally provided a wide range of architectural services; however, under the direction of Tom Mullinax, AIA, HDR now focuses solely on hospice care environments.

Tom conceived the idea of HDR as a healthcare-planning firm dedicated to working with small community hospitals. After some 20 years designing unique facilities, he and his family weathered a health crisis that introduced him to the concept of hospice. Tom was so inspired from designing his first hospice in Asheboro, NC that he chose to move his family there.

As an active member of the Asheboro community, Tom served as a trained hospice field volunteer, a member of the Board of Directors, and ultimately as a caregiver for his mother during the last year of her life. Having experienced hospice as both a professional and customer, Tom is uniquely qualified to speak to myriad issues surrounding hospice care.

With Tom at the helm, HDR has earned a reputation for providing cost effective, functional solutions to complex healthcare problems. As Head of Healthcare Design, Tom is both our primary architect and a design consultant to architectural firms across the country. He partners with architects and hospice organizations to identify specific needs and develop plans for facilities to meet unique needs in their individual communities.

Tom has collaborated with several state review agencies in drafting hospice facility regulations and has been an invited speaker for several state and six National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) conferences. In addition to being featured in several publications, Tom recently worked with Jay Mahoney founder of the Hospice House Network, and Dr. Dale Lupu of George Washington University in drafting the National Guidelines for the Design of Hospice Facilities.

While HDR provides full architectural/engineering services for clients who request it, we typically work architectural firms local to the hospice facility. This collaboration is advantageous in that project leaders can tap the expertise of HDR while also training local next generation hospice design specialists. Further, our collaboration with local firms provides clients the personal attention of an architectural firm located closer in proximity to project sites.
